The route
The route runs from Zürich Airport onto the A3 along Walensee, then the A13 south past Sargans and up the Rhine valley through Liechtenstein and Feldkirch. From there the A14 climbs toward Bludenz, where the S16 Arlberg Schnellstraße carries you up the valley through Langen and the Arlberg Tunnel toward St. Anton. In good conditions it is roughly 200 km and 2h 20min; I plan for realistic winter timing rather than a best-case number.
Winter conditions on the Arlberg
The final climb over the Arlberg is where 28 years of local driving matters. The S16 and the pass can see heavy snow, ice on the Bludenz stretch of the A14, and occasional tunnel or pass closures. My vehicles are 4x4, carry snow chains, and are prepared for 2,000 m altitude — this is my home road in every condition, not a motorway I visit twice a year. If the pass closes I already know the alternatives.
